Biography of Stefano Federici
I am a religious person, but not a believer. I feel I share the “human universal” of a constant search for meaning1. As humans we evolved “constraints” to look for a meaning for our existence and, like a domesticated fox, I too look for meaning in the golden color of a wheat field in the memory of an encounter2. But I do not believe in any content of faith, though I was educated and trained in the Roman Catholic religion and, as a Doctor of Theology, I taught Catholic theology.
I love doing research that satisfies my curiosity to learn and have new experiences.
From 1995 to 1998, I was an adjunct professor at the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences «Auxilium» in Rome. My teaching on the religious and sexual education of people with disabilities and the fight against pedophilia in the Roman Church led to my removal.
From 1998 to 2000, I lived in the United States, where I contributed to the understanding of feminist theology and sexual abuse and the condition of women in the Christian environment3, with reference to the patriarchal structures of Biblical and post-Biblical Judaic society and reform movements against kyriarchal sex/gender systems4, according to the approach of the critical feminist liberation movement5.
Returning to Rome in 2000 and unable to teach at pontifical universities because of my research on clergy sexual abuse, I began to collaborate with the University of Lecce as a research fellow in psychology and with the Sapienza University of Rome as a contract professor, teaching “Assistive technology for the integration of disabilities” in the Faculty of Psychology.
In 2005, I became Associate Professor of General Psychology at the University of Perugia, and having obtained the National Scientific Qualification, was qualified to a professorship in 2017.
In the same year, I was designated (by decree of the rector) representative of the University of Perugia on the Scientific Board of the Interuniversity Research Center on Cognitive Processing in Natural and Artificial Systems (ECONA)6.
In 2003, I became one of the founders of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Disability and Technologies for Autonomy (CIRID) at the Sapienza University of Rome.
I have initiated numerous national and international research projects, attracting hundreds of thousands of euros.
My training and research as a philosopher, theologian, special educator, and experimentalist psychologist is interdisciplinary and concerns two main scientific macro fields: technology and human sciences. In the former, I work on assistive technologies in collaboration with the Institute for Matching Person & Technology (Webster, USA)7. I have worked on web sonification, brain-computer interfaces, eye tracking, exoskeletons, chatbots, and user experience and usability in human-computer interaction. In the latter, I deal with the cognitive and behavioral processes of people with and without disabilities in the areas of sexuality, gender violence, gender attribution, cognitive representations and models of disability, evolutionary psychology and the architecture of mind, cognitive impairment (Alzheimer’s), and specific learning disorders.
The research projects I have directed or collaborated on have allowed me to collaborate with researchers and scientists in theology, engineering, computer science, statistics, the sociology of religion, geriatrics, and psychology.
